The Finnish School of the Hague

The Finnish School of the Hague is the oldest Finnish School in the Netherlands founded in 1999 by Merja Akkola. The school offers students with a Finnish background an opportunity to preserve and improve their Finnish language skills and to keep them acquainted with Finnish culture. It has students from 3 to 16 years of age and older students (as well as parents) are welcome to join the school, for example as assistants.

The Finnish School of the Hague gives lessons once a week in two locations, in the Hague and in Wassenaar.  The lessons in The Hague are on Wednesdays at 2-3pm and 3-4pm and in Wassenaar on Thursdays at 4-5pm and 5-6pm.

New pupils are welcome to visit lessons with their parents. Alternatively you can email teacher Hanna Noomen info(at)suomi-koulu.nl to register.

Curriculum

Teaching is based on the curriculum of the mother tongue (Finnish) used in the Finnish school system. Our main goal is to make children interested in the Finnish language, culture and communication.  The pupils also get an opportunity to play with other Finnish children. The better their language skills get, the more confidence the children gain as a communicators. They will learn to appreciate Finnish language and culture. It is also very important for us to reinforce a positive attitude and understanding towards different cultures and teach the children that being able to use two (or more) languages in their daily lives is a gift.

Finnish culture, its most typical features and traditions are discussed during the lessons and utilised when creating  and choosing teaching material. We talk about the differences and similarities between cultures, those of Finland and Holland in particular.

Welcome!
